This week’s discussion is split into two questions and is inspired by the fact I’m currently being ill and feeling very sorry for myself: How is your skin impacted when you’re ill? And what film is guaranteed to make you feel better when you’re poorly?
Every Friday I open up a discussion topic and ask you for your recommendations, experiences, questions, or general feelings on a specific topic.
These Threads are a way to share your knowledge and meet other people in the community, so please comment and do feel free to like and reply to other people as well - we’re all here because we are in the Rosacea Club! 🧡
Hope you’re better soon! The last time I was sick, I was so pale I had no redness in my face for the first time in years — a temporary cure for rosacea! 😂
Usually any kind of illness results in redness and bumps, especially if there is fever.
Audiobooks comfort me more than films — I love Diane Duane’s “Omnitopia Dawn”, and the first book in Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series.
I find audio books of old Georgette Heyer regency novels are pretty funny and soothing (Arabella, Cotillion, The Nonesuch, Friday’s Child, False Colours).
*Trigger Warning: GH was an early 20th century and some of her books haven’t aged well (antisemitism in The Grand Sophy, sexually forceful men in her earlier works) but they are pretty easy to weed out thanks to the internet.
I found when I had covid that my skin looked better than it had in a while. Always annoying when you're not doing anything! But it did get me wondering, was it because I wasn't eating as normal, did my body have other things to do? But thinking about it, it's probably because I wasn't going outside because it did flare up after - the environment is a big trigger for me. Regarding the film I watch when I'm poorly, I go for what my partner & I call the Sunday Afternoon film, something like Toy Story
I have wondered this in the past, whether the body is busy fighting off inflammation elsewhere and is therefore less reactive on the face... no idea how scientific that is though!
I love that genre of film, we watched Inside Out 2 recently and loved it.
I have to be careful with hot drinks - and tissues as some of the super lotions ones are irritating. That said, sometimes antihistamines help tighten up those veins on my face.
I struggled with that too last week - I wanted some warms drinks to make me feel better but was so worried about annoying my skin. Such a tricky balance!
That’s a resounding YES! My skin is most certainly impacted by illness. I had a terrible flare up last week after having a relatively minor procedure done under mild anesthesia. It was a doozy and lasted a couple of days. I tend to binge true crime docuseries when I’m healing and, admittedly, when I’m not. 🤦♀️
So many parts of my daily routine/setup change so it's hard to tell what is a result of that and what is a direct result of being sick. My skin is definitely drier! But it's also a time when I notice my skin less because there's other discomfort at the top of the list. Nanny McPhee and Babe have healing properties 🙏
Yes I think that's a huge part of it, the routine is the first thing to go. Plus I'm always so dehydrated when I'm ill so my skin is immediately cranky! Nanny McPhee is such an underrated film...

Thank you so much, I'm getting there! I will have to check out those audiobooks, my library is running low!

That's so interesting - also I hope you're feeling better after your procedure.
And if you have any obscure true crime recommendations please feel free to share, I'm always looking for news ones!
