Every Friday I open up a discussion topic and ask you for your recommendations, experiences, questions, or general feelings on a specific topic.
These Threads are a way to share your knowledge and meet other people in the community, so please comment and do feel free to like and reply to other people as well - we’re all here because we are in the Rosacea Club! 🧡
My most used distraction techniques are: colouring in (I flipping love a mandala or geometric pattern), reading or watching anything to with the end of the world, and playing Sims until my eyeballs dry up.
I write fanfiction, usually long fics which i post weekly, so that gives me something to focus on every week. I try to get bits of writing done in between other jobs and am thinking about it quite a lot. It means I’m living inside my head and disappearing into a fantasy world for short periods of time and that’s really soothing.
When I was about 21 I tried to get into knitting and was knitting on a train, minding my own business, when a little old lady leaned over and said 'are you new to knitting? You're terrible at it' and that really put me off and I haven't done it since! I'm very tempted by crochet though...
What the heck! People can be so darn negative and don’t even realize what impact such an unnecessary comment can have. I knit on the train/in public all the time and get strange looks sometimes, but there are also much more positive interactions and I want to focus on that instead. Hope you’ll get to check out crochet!!
It's so odd isn't it? What on earth did she gain from that interaction? I love that you've had positive responses, I'm always very impressed when I see people doing any kind of crafts!
I have started embroidery this year. Having never done it before I purchased some Beginner Kits on a whim after seeing an ad on Facebook. I got 3 of them, and am on the final one. I love it. I think I'll be buying some more! (Search cleverpoppy.com if anyone is interested!)
My sister actually recommended embroidery to me for this reason, she loves it. I started making a quilt at the beginning of the year, I might have to dig that back out...
Painting by numbers when it is really bad! I really have to concentrate on looking for the numbers and it takes a long time. All kit provided and the results are always very satisfying.
Generally, creating art work of any kind. I attend classes and love to paint in oils but I have also done online video classes which engage all your senses - great distraction and can be done cheaply with acrylic paint in primary colours and the cardboard from old cereal packets! Many classes on You Tube are free.

I love this! Writing and reading really quiets my brain so I can see how it would be incredibly soothing
Knitting and swimming.
Knitting can be like meditation and swimming just makes me feel really good and happy.

I keep getting advertised those paint by numbers kits and think they look so fun!
I will have a look at the online classes, they sound right up my street - thank you!
